I love the old pictures: I like the ones where people are crowded in a small space, some of them looking like they’re not really paying attention but most looking just as mesmerized as fans do today, and the ones where the boys look like a hair metal band…. Here are two batches of old photos — here and here — some that I’d seen before and others I hadn’t. They’re not labeled as to when or where they were taken. On some you can tell it’s Gilman Street: “Berkeley sucks” painted on the wall is a dead giveaway.

Edit: Even though I actually have the 39/Smooth re-release, it didn’t occur to me that half these photos are from there. Duh!
