I came across a recent review of Dookie — is it a timeless classic yet? (Yesssss! Of course it is!) — that hits a lot of nails satisfyingly right on the head. It’s a piece written by someone who knows how to listen and knows how to write.
This is an excerpt:
“If there was a polite way to say “fuck off”, Green Day seems to have discovered it. By throwing out all the superfluous glitz and glam of rock, they created a simpler sound that anybody thought they could make as well — oh, how wrong they were.”
Another excerpt:
“There’s a catch to this seemingly simple style: The melodies come from the mind of the songwriter, which makes me think that Armstrong should donate his brain to science….”
